Re:place Radio Presents Episode 3 - Nadya Shanab

Fresh on the heels on my session with Dire Wolfe I had the true pleasure of being joined in the Re:place Radio Pod this week by Nadya Shanab. Luckily the smell of boy left over from my previous interview had almost subsided and I really enjoyed the mixture of English and Arabic tunes Nadya played for me this evening.

Whispered Prompt Podcast 080806 Painters

Painters

***

Walking down the Royal Mile you will find a number of buskers who could be classed as physical performers and a number find themselves quite funny. It was very refreshing to see what four walls, a roof, some lighting and great music can make. The physical theatre was in itself amusing with the painting theme a great excuse for the inclusion of props such as ladders, scaffolding and paint tins. The actors made the best of the space they had with a number of their stunts leaving them just inches away from the lighting rig and the audience.

How to Explain the History of Communism to Mental Patients

Its not often that you see full scale production brought to Edinburgh. It is even rarer to see one brought all the way from Los Angeles, the production succeed in bringing its production values as well. This is by no means an easy show to understand but the company do well to portray the main messages the piece has to offer, even if the nuances would take more than one viewing.

Whispered Prompt Podcast 210806 American High Schools Theatre Festival

American High School Theatre Festival

American High School Theatre Festival festival runs in conjunction with the world renown Edinburgh Fringe Festival - the world's largest performing arts festival, which takes place each August in Edinburgh, Scotland. To select the schools who will participate, AHSTF relies on state, regional, and national theatre organizations and university theatre professors to nominate the nation's top high school theatre programs.

Whispered Prompt Podcast 070806 Bloggers - Real Internet Diaries

Bloggers - Real Internet Diaries

****

Blogging is no longer a new concept however Oliver Mann breaths new life into the blogosphere by adapting 10 british blogs for the stage. There were some real laugh out loud moments from the cast of five who bring to life the personal diaries of a verity of interesting characters. Although it is scary at times to think these are real people the play has a quick pace and your interest is held by character such as the agoraphobic sex line operator. The show has some amusingly explicit moments, including detailed descriptions of a bisexual business man's conquests, making the show not one for the kids.

Whispered Prompt Podcast 110806 Sister Mary McArthur: Celebrity Nun

Sister Mary McArthur: Celebrity Nun

***

Tim McArthur is known for his interesting an varied performances but doing the entire act as a nun is definitely what some would think as unconventional. He is making the most of his alter-ego and is putting on two shows as Sister Mary McArthur. Despite the fact that the audience spend and hour watch a man prancing about on stage as a nun accompanied by a pianist dressed as a priest there are no particularly scathing religious jokes.

Whispered Prompt Podcast 200806 Ewan Spence

Ewan Spence

Ewan was one of the pioneers of podcasting and was the co-founder of The Podcast Network, the first commercial podcasting network in February. By the time that August of that year had blown around he had decided he was going to take on the mamoth task of being the Fringe's first podcaster, a feat I tried to emulate in 2006, and managed to gain a fair amount of notoriety around the place for doing so.

Whispered Prompt Podcast 090806 The Dark Show

The Dark Show

****

Fi Hunter has come alone to the Fringe this year after turning down the other parts she was offered because she didn't want to be the token female, she is by no means a token female. The Dark Show is pure tragicomedy with everyone of her characters being in some way connected to death. Each of the poor sods Hunter present us with is a funny as the last and the performance flows well between from beginning to end including a video segment and a disembodied second character.

Whispered Prompt Podcast 190806 Free Fringe

Free Fringe

The Free Fringe began in 1996, founded by Peter Buckley Hill, with his show Peter Buckley Hill And Some Comedians.

Peter saw the Fringe as it then was: performers losing thousands of pounds, venues with four or five people in them, and complaints about high ticket prices. He saw that this was a vicious cycle. As costs to the performers rose, ticket prices rose. As ticket prices rose, fewer people went to shows and even fewer went to shows by artists they hadn't heard of.

Whispered Prompt Podcast 100806 The Plan B Show

The Plan B Show

****

If this show was any sharper it would probably cut itself. Seven nights into the run these guys have every move calculated. The cues are as quick fire as a tommy gun, which I think is probably one of the props used in this mindbogglingly slick production. The show takes us through the last 51 minutes of Steven Tooley's life, probably not something that Thomas Nelstrop has experienced himself, but he makes ever second of those 51 minutes count.

Whispered Prompt Podcast 060806 An Asylum on Every Corner

An Asylum on Every Corner

James Michalos decided to write a musical about mental illness after reading a newspaper article about it. The results take the audience through the daily lives of Ashford Dell, a care home for the mentally ill. The plot follows the dilemmas of the centre's owner as he toils over selling the land the centre is built on or furthering the good work his mother started.

Whispered Prompt Podcast 220806 News Revue

News Revue

NewsRevue originated as an afterthought. Two writers from a London university revue group, Mike Hodd and Jack Thorington, had spent a year submitting material with varied success to BBC Radio 4's Week Ending. The group was going to Edinburgh with the usual university revue offering of late night tosh, and a selection from the material prepared for Week Ending was cobbled together at the last minute, directed by Tim Miller, for a lunch-time show. It opened on 18th August 1979 at the unpromising time of 1:30pm at the Royal Arch Halls on Queens Street.
