An Asylum on Every Corner

****

James Michalos decided to write a musical about mental illness after reading a newspaper article about it. The results take the audience through the daily lives of Ashford Dell, a care home for the mentally ill. The plot follows the dilemmas of the centre's owner as he toils over selling the land the centre is built on or furthering the good work his mother started.

The characters may appear a tad flat at the beginning however this impression was quickly quashed as the carers themselves showed deeper character traits floating to the surface as the piece continued. The lyrics are the real strengths of the musical which have been skillfully by Michalos. The entire cast do the music justice with some looking more comfortable on stage than others. There was an especially strong performances from Felicity Russell who brought the character of the anorexic nurse to life. The production did a good job of avoiding the pitfalls of misrepresenting mental illness and the thrust stage made the performance interesting to watch.
