How to Explain the History of Communism to Mental Patients
****
Its not often that you see full scale production brought to Edinburgh. It is even rarer to see one brought all the way from Los Angeles, the production succeed in bringing its production values as well. This is by no means an easy show to understand but the company do well to portray the main messages the piece has to offer, even if the nuances would take more than one viewing.
A moving performance is given by the entire ensemble cast who seemed to move as one through a difficult piece. The piece focuses on a mental institution where the mentally ill of Moscow are to have the history of Communism explained to them, thus bringing them closer to their communist ideas. The piece turns the mental institution into a microcosm for then entire tyranny and oppression of the Russian State. Jeremy Lawrence gives a stirring performance as Yuri Petrovski, the piece's focus as writer sent to the institution to teach the inmates. The theatre absurd nature of the piece is well carried by the company and despite the historical subject matter of the show it is still relevant satire.
